The driving force behind this coarsening of political culture is a US president who is reshaping not only American society and culture, but also the global order according to his own vision and interests — and who does so with ever less concealment, presenting himself as a monarch or Caesar. Other international politicians are now beginning to imitate this autocratic model of success.

The Römerberggespräche seek to understand this style of politics. What do such acts of self-staging mean, what are they founded upon, and why do they sometimes even resonate with voters? What can still be opposed to this reckless self-aggrandizement — or is the new reality that old one in which 'the strong do what they will, and the weak suffer what they must' (Thucydides)?
