The exhibition “A Step Ahead / Einen Schritt voraus” at Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt takes the centenary of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony’s first exhibition in 1901 as an opportunity to explore the relationship between historical and contemporary perspectives in design, architecture and art. Within the historic exhibition building, four halls house themed spaces where original works meet contemporary approaches. The starting point is the artists’ colony’s holistic approach to design, which continues to have an impact to this day. As part of the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain, the exhibition highlights how design can help shape social change.
