Software and digital services shape our everyday lives. The trend is clearly moving in one direction: digitalization will continue to increase in all areas. For democracy, this opens up opportunities in the form of greater participation, better access, discourse, and greater equality of opportunity. At the same time, new risks arise, such as the concentration of power, security risks, dependencies, and opaque decision-making processes.

Artificial intelligence acts as an amplifier in this context. It can support democratic processes, but it can also exacerbate existing imbalances.

In this context, open source is often understood as a counter-model to software from large, dominant providers: as a foundation for transparency, traceability, and digital sovereignty. Open software can be audited, developed collaboratively, and reduce dependencies. It enables states, companies, and individuals to retain more control over their digital tools and thus their everyday lives.

However, open source is not a panacea. Openness alone guarantees neither security nor widespread use. Effective governance, accountability, funding, a strong community, and effective marketing are essential.

So, how exactly does open source fit into this complex landscape? What can it realistically achieve – and where are its limitations? Where is open source even harmful? Is open source more than just software? And on a practical level: Where are we already using it today, often without even realizing it?

WordPress Meetup Frankfurt Group

The series is initiated by the organizers of the WordPress Meetup Frankfurt group. WordPress is open-source software that can be used by anyone to create websites. A large majority of all websites are based on WordPress. A monthly meeting is held with topics ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
