Young people explore and shape urban spaces in Frankfurt using methods from product design and theatre. Through this process, they create their own objects to enhance public spaces and encourage multicultural, intergenerational interaction.
At the heart of the project is the participation of young people in shaping public space in Frankfurt. The aim is to give 9th- and 10th-grade students at the Georg-August-Zinn-Schule the opportunity to contribute their perspectives and ideas to urban development. In various consecutive workshop phases, they explore the urban environment, analyze needs, develop creative solutions, and work together with professionals to create concrete concepts.
The young participants become co-designers of their surroundings, experience self-efficacy, and gain insight into interdisciplinary planning processes. The project promotes understanding of urban structures and the needs of different user groups. The project is accompanied by experts from the fields of urban planning, design, and public administration. Public participation is part of the entire process – from needs analysis to final presentation.
Phase-related components include:
- Exploring the neighborhood,
- professional input,
- surveys,
- creative model-making,
- collaboration with the local community,
- and insights into potential career paths.
The project concludes with a public celebration at the school and an exhibition conceived by the students as part of the WDC, showcasing both results and process.
