SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa
The exhibition “SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa” offers an insight into the rich and diverse comic scene across the African continent. A growing group of young creatives is using their work to explore (precolonial) history, draw on cultural myths and symbols and address pressing social and environmental issues. Through their comics, they bring their voices, experiences and demands into the global conversation. They engage with the urgent topics of our time and imagine bold new futures.
SHEROES places female protagonists and perspectives at the centre: Superheroines who fight environmental disasters alongside local deities; a young woman navigating everyday urban life; characters defending LGBTQ rights; a storyteller committed to the democratic sharing of knowledge.
With their work, these comic artists challenge the status quo of the global art and culture scene – where female perspectives from the Global South are still too often marginalised.
