Since 1943, the Cervi family, a family of Italian partisans, has hosted the Antifascist Pasta every year on July 25. At that time, it was celebrated to mark the arrest of Mussolini, and to this day, free pasta is served on this day there and throughout Italy to celebrate together, give each other courage and strength, and celebrate democratic coexistence even in times of resurgent right-wing structures.
The Italian partisan association ANPI has “replicated” the Anti-Fascist Pasta in many places abroad, including Hamburg and Berlin.
In the context of World Design Capital 2026, Antifascist Pasta will also bring city dwellers together by chance, bringing them closer together under an overarching democratic mindset, entertaining, activating, and satisfying them.
Thea Hoffmann-Axthelm is a scenographer and has been researching for some time how she can apply artistic strategies from the theater to public spaces in order to strengthen democratic coexistence there.
