How can events in the RheinMain region be made more sustainable? This was the question addressed by design management students at BGBA Hanau in their fourth semester. Working alongside Congress Park Hanau and the Hanau Environmental Centre, they analysed why sustainable event concepts are rarely implemented despite the opportunities available – and developed practical approaches to change this.

The project demonstrates that sustainability does not have to mean doing without or incurring higher costs. It raises awareness of responsible behaviour and highlights how design can positively influence human behaviour. The results provide impetus for strengthening environmental standards in the events industry in the long term.

“We don’t have to constantly invent new things,” says Prof. Ariane Schwarz, Head of the Design Management programme at BGBA Hanau. “It is far more important to make consistent use of what already exists. Sustainable events in particular reveal just how vast the untapped potential is. The project demonstrates that design, combined with the right methodology, can produce effective solutions. Those who engage intensively with a topic often find that reality is more complex, more exciting and different than initially assumed.

Exhibition in the BGBA Hanau gallery, Stadthof Hanau, 3rd floor (former Kaufhof): Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 14:30.
