Global human rights standards are losing their significance because the state-based order is being called into question. The majority of states that have committed in writing to international law and human rights lack democratic legitimacy or are evolving into authoritarian regimes. The revocation of licenses for aid organizations in conflict regions, state and non-state human rights organizations being labeled as “agents,” censorship, and the crackdown on civil society are just some of the consequences.

During this one-day symposium, the various events, perspectives, and methods leading to this erosion will be discussed from academic, political, and empirical perspectives. How can human rights be safeguarded and implemented on the ground amid changes at the global level? What options for shaping the future exist?

The focus is on questions regarding the extent to which the existing international order is increasingly being replaced by a new “g-local” structure, and what possibilities exist for restoring or actively reshaping a rules-based order—in Germany, in Europe, and at the global level.

The German Society for the United Nations (DGVN), the Human Rights Working Group of the German Political Science Association (DVPW), and the Schader Foundation look forward to welcoming scholars, political activists, and representatives from government agencies, NGOs, and other organizations active in the field to a stimulating discussion.
