Inklusives Design im Handeln erleben

2026

Wirtschaftsdienst des Hessischen Handels GmbH

Errands and shopping are everyday moments for everyone – including people with disabilities. But what is it really like to enter a drugstore with a visual impairment or navigate a supermarket in a wheelchair?

This project explores how store layouts and design can help people with disabilities enjoy a barrier-free shopping experience. To achieve this, a free booklet/magazine will be created, highlighting disability-friendly and accessible shops in Frankfurt. Its structure is designed as a “walking tour.” The booklet will feature not only images of the locations but also explanations of the inclusive design principles behind them. It will be produced in easy-to-read language and with features for visually impaired readers (e.g., read-aloud functionality).

The aim is to show that many retail spaces are easily accessible for people with disabilities and that stores welcome everyone. Primarily, the project collects barrier-free shops through the economic service of the Hessian Retail Association, with support from the Frankfurt merchant network.
