A special place in Wiesbaden lies dormant. Since 2020, KlarA stadt.land.gut e.V. has been working as a civic initiative on a utilisation concept for the Klarenthal estate.
The conditions are challenging – from the condition of the buildings and the suitability of the rooms to requirements and financial viability to dialogue with politicians and administrators. At the same time, examples from Cologne, Bad Homburg and Weimar show the potential that such places offer: they can become lively, open meeting places for urban society.
The aim of the initiative is to create living spaces for the future on the estate. Until then, parts of the beautiful buildings and open spaces can be used for temporary purposes. Parts of the buildings and outdoor areas are to be activated for temporary use in the meantime. As a ‘monument to the future’, the estate can accommodate new, inclusive forms of living in the long term and offer spaces for work, education, socio-culture and gastronomy – in a spirit of solidarity and community and with clear added value for the neighbourhood. The result is a designed, public space created by the citizens for the citizens.
KlarA stadt.land.gut e.V. is a non-profit association that emerged from the Gemeinschaftlich Wohnen eG cooperative in Wiesbaden. The estate belongs to the city of Wiesbaden. The concept award for the property is currently being prepared.
