Fratopia Festival 2026

Now in its fourth edition in 2026, Fratopia sees itself as a flagship festival that articulates the utopia of a ‘concert hall of the future’ and boldly opens its doors to a broad, young and international audience.

Many parameters of conventional concert operations are turned upside down: admission to all 250 or so (short) concerts is free; concertgoers can put together their own programme; concerts begin at 3 p.m. (even on weekdays) and last until midnight. Through lighting and atmosphere, and above all through the staging of the concert halls in 360-degree performances (central stage), the Alte Oper is perceived as a new, forward-looking venue for artistic experience and participation. The 2026 programme ranges from classical music (Clarissa Bevilacqua) and early music (Thomas Dunford) to experimental choral music (Humanophones), world music (Golna & Mahan Trio), chamber music (Hermès Quartet) and jazz (Iiro Rantala). The programme focuses on the themes of ‘women’ (Danae Doerken), ‘crossing borders’ (e.g. the Dutch ensemble Fuse), “experimentation” (with recorder player Donata Dora Summer) and ‘the independent scene’ (Spaemann & Bakanic), ‘Experimental’ (South African music with the Signum String Quartet), ‘Families’. The Liszt Salon will offer scent concerts for the first time, enabling a synaesthetic experience of music. A designer and florist are collaborating with the World Design Capital initiative to create a new concert setting for the Schumann Salon.

With almost 500,000 visitors annually, the Alte Oper is one of Europe's largest concert halls. Its programme ranges from classical music to world music, jazz, entertainment and conferences. Internationally renowned soloists, ensembles and orchestras perform regularly at the Alte Oper. The Alte Oper sees itself as an urban, open, international and innovative ‘concert hall of the present’: through new concert formats, themed festivals and music education projects, the venue seeks to connect with its audience; with initiatives such as ten-euro tickets for people under 25, the community project ‘Eine Straße geht ins Konzert’ (A Street Goes to the Concert) and the ‘Enthusiastenorchester’ (Enthusiasts' Orchestra), the Alte Oper builds bridges to the urban community and the Rhine-Main region.
