Frankfurt feiert Demokratie - das Grundgesetz feiert Geburtstag 2026

The project Frankfurt feiert Demokratie will celebrate the birthday of Germany’s Basic Law and our democracy on May 23, 2026—colorful, diverse, inclusive and open to all.

The vision: people in neighborhoods, institutions, or companies set up tables and chairs in streets, squares or other spaces in their district and celebrate together. In doing so, a new shared public space is created where people can meet beyond their own social bubbles and engage in conversation—about the significance of the Basic Law in their lives and much more. Each group shapes its own programme: it could be a school choir performance, a gymnastics group demonstration, a discussion about specific articles of the Basic Law—or anything else their imagination inspires.

Moreover, the goal is to establish May 23 as a holiday for Frankfurt (and beyond), fostering a tradition of colorful, diverse, accessible and inclusive neighborhood celebrations without consumer pressure.
