Echoes of the Fjord (×) explores painting as an open material process. Its point of departure is an artistic research residency in Iceland, during which pigments, earths, and other natural materials were collected and transformed into colour substances. In the Frankfurt exhibition, these materials detach from their original landscape context and enter into a new configuration of water, textile, ceramics, light, and sound.

At its core is the question of how natural materials can be experienced not merely as a means of representation, but as active elements within an artistic system in their own right. Painting thus appears both as a process on site and as a continuation of earlier works, in which climatic processes, atmospheric conditions, sedimentations, and pigment movements have become inscribed.

The project is developed and realised by the artist Nina Tobien. In the exhibition, visitors encounter an installation-based constellation of painting, textile, sound, ceramics, and light, experiencing how material processes unfold within the space.

The project will be presented in an exhibition at the saasfeepavillon and saasfeesatellit in Frankfurt, where processes involving pigment, water, and light continue to shift and evolve over the duration of the exhibition.

The saasfee*pavillon is an exhibition space for contemporary young art and music. For “Echoes of the Fjord (×)”, the Icelandic Consulate in Frankfurt has taken on patronage. The exhibition will open with a speech by Dr. Uwe Säuberlich, Honorary Consul of Iceland.
