Die Straße als Startbahn / The Street as a Runway

Streets are more than traffic spaces. As part of WDC 2026, two streets will be transformed into launchpads for flying sculptures and simultaneously into places full of encounters and exchange.

At the same time, the project draws attention to their social and ecological qualities. Within the framework of the “CommunitARIA – Open School of Kite Flying,” an open workshop format, residents and visitors collaboratively design flying sculptures. These serve as symbols of unleashed imagination. Thanks to a modular system by Lorenzo Malloni, the sculptures can be easily assembled, enabling accessible workshops for all ages and languages. The selected street section consciously promotes social diversity, accessibility, and interaction. Ecological aspects are also integrated into the design: wind, light, humidity, vegetation, and even the presence of animals are taken into account. This creates a space where nature and community come together in new ways. The workshops open fresh perspectives for streets: they demonstrate how urban spaces can be lively, creative, and democratic—beyond car-centered structures. The goal is to make change tangible: mobility habits toward more sustainability become perceptible through shared experiences, design, and dialogue. Everyone can participate, contribute ideas, and become part of an urban transformation.
