Demokratie beginnt in der Küche

2026

Hochschule Mainz, University of Applied Sciences

The project addresses the need to rethink the kitchen as a traditional, often gendered functional space. Its goal is to transform it into an inclusive, open, and multifunctional meeting place that integrates work, cooking, social interaction, and digital connectivity. At the same time, vacant spaces are to be activated for community and social use.

Concrete Goals

  • Development of a prototypical, democratic kitchen space (Universal Design)
  • Promotion of inclusivity, adaptability, sustainability, and social participation
  • Dissolution of traditional gender roles through collective care work
  • Creation of a concept to activate vacant spaces as social kitchens
  • Development of a sustainability index for material choices, recycling, and CO2 footprint

Planned Steps and Visibility

  • Implementation of pop-up presentations and participatory workshops
  • Development of a digital tool and an interactive interface (Holodeck)
  • Creation of a prototype and presentation at exhibitions
  • Participation in discussion platforms

Participants

Hochschule Mainz (Architecture, Interior Architecture, Architecture Institute, bim.labor), ETS Arquitectura Madrid

Citizens, initiatives, and users can contribute through pop-up kitchens, workshops, and co-design processes to further develop the prototype.
