Cooling through vertical gardens: The installation utilizes the VERD° greening system: a construction of water-storage boxes, scaffolding components, and timber that supports textile nets, which fast-growing climbing plants scale throughout the summer. After just a few weeks, these plant sails provide not only natural shade and evaporative cooling but also promote biodiversity in highly sealed urban spaces. CARLO makes climate adaptation a direct, tangible experience—moving away from technical theory and toward real quality of life for everyone.

True to the spirit of the World Design Capital 2026 and its motto "Design for democracy. Atmospheres for a better life," CARLO is conceived as a participatory space. Neighbors, schools, and cultural creators are invited to actively help shape the program under the leafy canopy. The goal: to create a collective awareness for the climate adaptation of our cities. Furthermore, cozy hammocks in the shade await all passers-by who simply want to clear their heads.

At the end of June, the project initiators, together with the WDC 2026, invites the community to a first neighborhood festival around CARLO. Further events will follow.

Carlo is a collaborative project within the framework of WDC 2026 by Just Architekten GmbH, OMC°C, and Optigrün International AG.
