The CAMPUSBAULAB at the Department of Architecture at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences is a real-world laboratory situated at the interface between the campus and public urban space. As a temporary outdoor workshop, experimental space and meeting place, it brings together teaching, research and the public.

The focus is on co-creative processes of design, negotiation and construction. Democracy is understood not merely as a guiding principle, but as a concrete practice of spatial and social design. Through open workshop formats and interdisciplinary teams, structures are created on a 1:1 scale that function simultaneously as a workshop, forum and field of action.

In this way, CAMPUSBAULAB creates an open space of possibilities for sustainable, aesthetic and socially viable forms of building. The fact that experimentation also involves failure, detours and rethinking is an explicit part of the project’s approach: “Experimentation demands a space where failure isn’t excluded but embraced.”

As part of Open – Design Week, CAMPUSBAULAB will be opening its doors from 8 to 12 June to facilitate discussion, collaborative experimentation and diverse approaches to issues of building and design. Insights from the accompanying series “Space, People and Democracy” will be combined with practical activities that bring sustainability, perception and design to life.

When: Monday 14:00 – 18:00
Tuesday till Friday 9:30 – 18:00
Wo: Campus fba CAMPUSBAULAB

The project is led by Prof. Anke Mensing and research assistant Céline Grieb, in collaboration with other professors and with the support of the Dean’s Office of the School of Architecture, the Executive Board of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, and the EUt+ partner universities.
