At the heart of Flowers for Blum – A Village and Its Monument is the question of how the memory of democrats such as Robert Blum remains alive and what it means for our democracy today.
The monument in Petterweil is the only one of its kind in Germany – even though Blum was a central figure in the 1848 revolution. His story is little known. We address this blind spot and link it to today's challenges of democratic participation and action. The aim is to make democratic history and democracy visible and tangible through art.
Four days of performances are planned in the park at the Robert Blum monument. A small stage will be set up, food stalls will provide infrastructure, and at the same time, people are invited to bring their picnic blankets, folding chairs or food. Democracy will be celebrated together. Michael Quast plays Robert Blum, with a second actor as his opponent. Amateur actors will appear as figures of democracy. The Mainvokal choir, conducted by Katharina Blattmann, will sing revolutionary songs – together with local singers who will invite the audience to sing along.
The population can actively participate – through their attendance, contributions to the choirs and joint celebrations. Media coverage and local cooperation give the project wide visibility. This creates a bridge between the past and the present – between art, memory and democratic action.
