Design for future global Democracy

Workshop #2

We examine the concept of democracy from historical, political, and scientific perspectives and address current developments. We provide an overview of global and local democratic structures as well as future challenges.

In doing so, we look at the various designs of participatory opportunities, from informal approaches to political decision-making processes that directly influence politics. We provide insights into international debates and initiatives, such as the “We The Peoples” campaign, which envisions a democratic design for the global level through a UN world citizens' initiative, a UN Parliamentary Assembly, and a Special Representative for Civil Society. These proposals are designs for new mechanisms of citizen participation and political representation at the global level. Our goal: to empower participants to actively shape democracy and develop a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of political participation. We combine theoretical input with practical discussions and group work to promote dialogue and develop concrete approaches for action.
