Freedom of expression, diversity of opinion and responsibility for democracy: How are the media creating new spaces for debate and participation?
WDC 2026 will explore this question as part of the nationwide Freedom of Expression Week, taking place from 6 to 10 May 2026. WDC 2026 considers this to be a key issue that deserves public debate.
Under the theme of WDC 2026: Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a better life, we want to discuss with representatives from the media, academia and civil society how the media can create new spaces for debate, participation and democratic engagement. After all, the media shape not only how we absorb information, but also how we perceive reality, construct knowledge and conduct public debates. Particularly in times of polarisation, disinformation and growing pressure on democratic values, the question arises as to what responsibility the media bear for freedom of expression, diversity of opinion and social cohesion.
The event will take place at the WDC Hub. It is open to the public and admission is free.
