Places where people meet outside the home and the workplace – so-called ‘third places’ – are central to urban life. They are where informal encounters, exchanges and a sense of community flourish. At the same time, such places are coming under increasing pressure: public spaces are becoming more densely packed, places to linger are being commercialised, and non-commercial meeting places are becoming increasingly rare.

Where can we find such places in Frankfurt? What qualities make them places where we enjoy spending time and meeting one another? And where are spaces for interaction and community lacking?

As part of the event "Stadtreparatur – Debatten über gemeinschaftliche Stadtgestaltung für lebendige Orte", KSP Engel invites you to a public discussion at the Frankfurt Central Library on 3 September 2026 at 7.30 pm. Together with experts from various fields and the audience, we will discuss the significance of ‘third places’ for social life and how they can help shape the future of our city.

The discussion will take the perspectives of Frankfurt’s residents as its starting point. In the two weeks leading up to the event, visitors to the Central Library were able to mark their favourite places on interactive boards, identify places with potential, and share their wishes and ideas for future meeting places. The contributions gathered in this way will be incorporated into the discussion and will highlight how Frankfurt’s residents perceive their city as a social space.
