Starting in the 1950s, Frankfurt architect Ferdinand Kramer was responsible for the reconstruction and expansion of the university, which had been heavily damaged during the war.
By 1964, he and his young team had completed 23 buildings on the site. The future of many of Kramer’s designs, some of which are listed as historic monuments, remains uncertain, and only a few have been renovated so far. Against the backdrop of the current debate on greater sustainability in construction, this walking tour aims to take a fresh look at Kramer’s innovative buildings — with their many thoughtful and distinctive details — through this lens.
