To mark Frankfurt RheinMain being named World Design Capital 2026, the Hessenpark Open-Air Museum is inviting visitors to a special 90-minute guided tour entitled “Modernising half-timbered buildings – sustainable, beautiful, smart”.

The tour focuses on how traditional building culture can be combined with today's requirements for comfort, design and sustainability. Using the example of the half-timbered model house, it will be shown how bright rooms, open floor plans, a healthy indoor climate and intelligent building services can be practically implemented in historical architecture. In addition, the initial results of the ‘Fachwerk 2.0’ research project will be explained, in which innovative high-performance insulation materials and traditional insulation are being tested under real conditions. In addition, modern heating systems, the use of regional building material cycles and possibilities for contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions through resource-saving construction with half-timbered buildings will be presented. The ‘Garden of Building Components’ will also be presented, showcasing and explaining photovoltaics, grey water utilisation and measures to promote biodiversity. The tour will be rounded off with an explanation of the digital information offered by the Fachwerk Wiki, which allows for a more in-depth examination of the content.
